Kelsey McClellan graduated in May 2012 from the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus Ohio with a BFA in Photography. Since completing her course, Kelsey has since starting marketing for Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, wherein she can indulge her passion on a full-time basis.
“I became interested in photographing food during my junior year, when I started baking all the time at home on the weekends and after class. I would shoot all the cookies or pies I made and blog the recipes for fun. It wasn’t really what direction I intended my photographic career to move into, but I found it much more enjoyable than photographing people. Soon after I was offered an internship shooting for an ice cream company, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, where I now make videos and shoot photos for marketing full-time.”
“Shooting food, especially ice cream, can be incredibly challenging but is always fun (and delicious). For ice cream there is really only about a 10 minute window to get the perfect shot. It can’t be too cold or it will look hard and icy, and it obviously can’t melt completely. It’s the moment right before it melts, when it is about to fall apart, that it is the most beautiful. I have learned a lot from shooting in Jeni’s production kitchen as well, where I can’t control the elements and everything happens so quickly. The energy of the photos can really change depending on what is being made and on the overall energy of the kitchen, I love when that comes through in a photograph.”
“I’ve also always had a strong interest in graphic design, illustration, and painting. I love incorporating illustrated elements into my photographs, which is something I’ve been experimenting with more lately. My goal is to one day photograph and possibly design a cook book. I’d also love shooting for a food/lifestyle quarterly publication, so I can photograph a wider range of subjects and locations.”
